Six Tibetan Children
In January of 2008 we were able to send $300 in donations to a Buddhist monk named Tsering Tharchin from Sera Je Monastery in southern India, for the support of six Tibetan children who are under his care. Tsering is a friend of Geshe Ngawang Singey, our very own "Geshe-la" who teaches at Sanctuary once a month. All six of these precious children walked or were carried out of Tibet so that they could learn Tibetan culture, Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan language. They go to a residential school for Tibetan children near Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama has his residence. For vacations (when school is shut down) and holidays, they must travel by train to the south of India to be with their guardian Tsering Tharchin at the monastery. Here are photos of the children and Tsering, taken during last winter's holiday.

Here is an excerpt from a letter we received from Tsering:
"Thank you very much for the money which you sent. It is very difficult for me to look after children cause I am also monk student. Anyway I will tell about the children's class standard. The highest one is class 7 and lowest is class 4. These children are good in education and also good character. These children are really very good in every thing but the three children have no parents and other three their parents are in Tibet. In India I am the only one who takes responsibility. so without you all it is really very difficult for me. So I am going to stop my letter here with once again thanks for your support."

We plan to continue to collect donations for the support of these six children. We have about $60 as of July 1, 2008. Your contributions are always welcome.
Geshe-la told us recently that Tsering will receive his Geshe degree soon. (That is the highest level of education in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and requires over twenty years of study.) Congratulations, Tsering Tharchin!
